EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance: clear, colorless liquid. Caution! May cause lung damage. May cause blood abnormalities. May cause cardiac disturbances. May cause kidney damage. May cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation.
Target Organs: Kidneys, respiratory system, muscles, cardiovascular system.

Potential Health Effects
Eye: May cause eye irritation.
Skin: May cause skin irritation.
Ingestion: Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Barium chloride affects the muscles (especially the smooth muscles of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems), ingestion large amounts may cause salivation, tingling of the mouth or face, convulsions, numb ness, muscle paralysis, respiratory failure, slow pulse rate, pulmonar y edema, irregular heart beat, potassium deficiency in the blood, and kidney damage.
Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion.
Chronic: No information found.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin: Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion: If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Treat symptomatically and supportively. Get medical aid.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid if cough or other symptoms appear. Get medical aid.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear.
Extinguishing Media: For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam.
Flash Point: Not applicable.
Autoignition Temperature: Not applicable.
Explosion Limits, Lower:Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating: (estimated) Health: 1; Flammability: 0; Instability: 0

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage

Handling: Wash hands before eating. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible exposure limits.
