|
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: clear, colorless liquid. Flash Point: 20 deg C.
Warning! Contains formaldehyde which can cause
cancer. May cause allergic respiratory and skin reaction.
Flammable liquid and vapor. Causes eye, skin, and
respiratory tract irritation. This substance has caused adverse
reproductive and fetal effects in humans. May cause central nervous
system depression. Cannot be made non-poisonous.
Target Organs: Kidneys, heart, central nervous
system, liver, lungs, respiratory system, teeth, eyes, skin.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes severe eye irritation. May cause chemical conjunctivitis
and corneal damage.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic
reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
Substance is readily absorbed through the skin. May cause irritation
and dermatitis. May cause cyanosis of the extremities.
Ingestion:
May cause central nervous system depression, kidney damage, and
liver damage. Symptoms may include: headache, excitement, fatigue,
nausea, vomiting, stupor, and coma. May cause gastrointestinal
irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Ingestion of large
amounts may cause CNS depression.
Inhalation:
Inhalation of high concentrations may cause central nervous system
effects characterized by nausea, headache, dizziness, unconsciousness
and coma. Causes respiratory tract irritation. Prolonged exposure may
result in dizziness and general weakness. May cause asthmatic attacks
due to allergic sensitization of the respiratory tract. Can produce
delayed pulmonary edema.
Chronic:
Chronic ingestion may cause liver damage. Prolonged or repeated skin
contact may cause defatting and dermatitis. May cause reproductive
and fetal effects. Contains formaldehyde which can cause cancer in
humans. There is sufficient evidence that formaldehyde causes
nasopharyngeal cancer in humans, a rare cancer in developed
countries. There is limited evidence that formaldehyde causes cancer
of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses and strong but not
sufficient evidence for leukemia.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing
before reuse.
Ingestion:
Call a poison control center. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting
unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by
mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not
breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult,
give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Notes to Physician:
Activated charcoal does not reduce ethanol absorption. Persons with
pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems, or impaired liver,
kidney, or respiratory function may be more susceptible to the
effects of this substance. Effects may be delayed.
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. Vapors may form an explosive mixture with air.
Vapors can travel to a source of ignition and flash back. Will burn
if involved in a fire. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed
containers cool. Containers may explode in the heat of a fire.
Flammable liquid and vapor.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or
alcohol-resistant foam. For large fires, use water spray, fog, or
alcohol-resistant foam. Use water spray to cool fire-exposed
containers. Water may be ineffective. Do NOT use straight streams of
water.
Flash Point: 20 deg C ( 68.00 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: 362.8 deg C ( 685.04 deg F)
Explosion Limits, Lower:3.3% (ethanol)
Upper: 19.0% (ethanol)
NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 1; Flammability: 3; Instability: 0
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth),
then place in suitable container. Remove all sources of ignition.
Absorb spill using an absorbent, non-combustible material such as
earth, sand, or vermiculite. Do not use combustible materials such
as sawdust. Use a spark-proof tool. Provide ventilation. A vapor
suppressing foam may be used to reduce vapors.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Ground and bond containers when transferring
material. Use spark-proof tools and explosion proof equipment. Avoid
contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Empty containers retain
product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be dangerous. Keep
container tightly closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame.
Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze,
solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or
open flames. Use only with adequate ventilation.
Storage:
Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Keep away from sources of
ignition. Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
Flammables-area.
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls:
Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment. Use adequate general or
local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the
permissible exposure limits. See 29CFR 1910.1048 for regulatory
requirements pertaining to all occupational exposures to
formaldehyde, i.e., from formaldehyde gas, its solutions, and
materials that release formaldehyde.
