Section 3 - Hazards Identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance: oily, colorless liquid.
Warning! Causes eye irritation. May be harmful if swallowed or absorbed through the skin. This substance has caused adverse reproductive and fetal effects in animals. Hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air).
Target Organs: Eyes.

Potential Health Effects
Eye: Causes severe eye irritation.
Skin: May cause mild skin irritation. May be harmful if absorbed through the skin. Substance is readily absorbed through the skin. Not expected to cause an allergic skin reaction.
Ingestion: May be harmful if swallowed. Ingestion of large amounts may cause CNS depression.
Inhalation: Causes irritation of mucous membrane.
Chronic: May cause fetal effects based on animal studies. Eastman Kodak study on the developmental toxicity of 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol in rats by gavage at doses of 0, 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 mg/kg produced maternal toxicity and lethality at oral doses of 2000 and 4000 mg/kg. Significant fetal toxicity and teratogenicity were evident at a maternally toxic dose (2000 mg/kg), while only one fetus in the 500 mg/kg and two fetuses in the 1000 mg/kg group had tail

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin: Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion: If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Water may be ineffective. Material is lighter than water and a fire may be spread by the use of water. Vapors may be heavier than air. They can spread along the ground and collect in low or confined areas.
Extinguishing Media: Water spray may cause frothing. In case of fire, use carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder or appropriate foam.
Flash Point: 120 deg C ( 248.00 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: 335 deg C ( 635.00 deg F)
Explosion Limits, Lower:Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating: (estimated) Health: 2; Flammability: 1; Instability: 0

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Provide ventilation.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage

Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing vapor or mist.
Storage: Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Store protected from moisture.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
