Section 3 - Hazards Identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance: clear, colorless liquid. Flash Point: 1 deg C.
Warning! Flammable liquid and vapor. May cause irritation. May cause central nervous system depression. This substance has caused reproductive effects in humans.
Target Organs: Blood, reproductive system, skin.

Potential Health Effects
Eye: May cause eye irritation.
Skin: May cause skin irritation. Repeated or prolonged exposure may cause drying and cracking of the skin.
Ingestion: May cause central nervous system depression, kidney damage, and liver damage. Symptoms may include: headache, excitement, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, stupor, and coma. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated.
Inhalation: Inhalation of high concentrations may cause central nervous system effects characterized by nausea, headache, dizziness, unconsciousness and coma.
Chronic: Chronic inhalation and ingestion may cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation and ingestion. Adverse reproductive effects have been reported in humans.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Skin: Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists.
Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation: Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Flammable liquid and vapor.
Extinguishing Media: Use foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide.
Flash Point: 1 deg C ( 33.80 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: Not available.
Explosion Limits, Lower:4.60 vol %
Upper: .00 vol %
NFPA Rating: (estimated) Health: ; Flammability: 3; Instability: 0

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Remove all sources of ignition. Provide ventilation. Approach spill from upwind.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage

Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Ground and bond containers when transferring material. Use spark-proof tools and explosion proof equipment. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be dangerous. Do not breathe vapor. Use only with adequate ventilation. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame.
Storage: Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Flammables-area.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment. Use process enclosure, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to control airborne levels.

Epidemiology: There is human data that show 2-bromopropane harms reproduction. In 1995, the National Institute of Occupational Health in Korea studied a group of 25 women and 8 men who had been exposed to 2-bromopropane by breathing in and touching the chemical in atactile switch manufacturing plant. The institute estimated average exposures to be about 12 ppm. The exposed workers had problems such as ovarian failure, very low sperm counts, and blood disorders including anemia.
Teratogenicity: No data available.
