|
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: clear yellow liquid.
Warning! Causes eye irritation. May be harmful if
swallowed. May cause skin and respiratory tract irritation. Possible
risk of harm to the unborn child. Corrosive to aluminum.
Target Organs: Eyes.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation.
Skin:
May cause skin irritation. May be harmful if absorbed through the
skin.
Ingestion:
May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea. May be harmful if swallowed.
Inhalation:
May cause respiratory tract irritation. The toxicological properties
of this substance have not been fully investigated.
Chronic:
Possible risk of harm to the unborn child.
The NOEL is based on the most sensitive study deemd to be of
sufficient quality, which is study where sodium
dimethyldithiocarbamate was administered at doses of 0, 0.4, 4 and
40 mg/kg-day by gavage to New Zealand white rabbits from gestation
day 6 - 18. Found an increased incidence of 13th thoracic ribs,
rudimentary or short. Extra ribs can reflect a homeotic shift, a
failure of the genetic program for body patterning, which is broadly
relevant to normal development in all species and so is directly
relevant to potential effects in humans.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally
lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing
before reuse.
Ingestion:
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical
aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not
breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult,
give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases
may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media:
Use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.
Flash Point: > 100 deg C (> 212.00 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: Not available.
Explosion Limits, Lower:Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 2; Flammability: 1; Instability:
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth),
then place in suitable container. Avoid runoff into storm sewers and
ditches which lead to waterways. Clean up spills immediately,
observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing
vapors from heated material. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and
clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid breathing spray or
mist. Do not store or handle in aluminum equipment at temperatures
over 120°F.
Storage:
Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed
container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from
incompatible substances. Do not store in aluminum containers.
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped
with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate
ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
